Amber Room
This town, 25km from St. Petersburg was named in 1937 after famous Russian poet and
writer Alexander Pushkin. At the beginning of the 18th century it was a small estate. Peter the
Great gave the lands of this estate to his wife Ekaterina. The town's former name was Tsarskoye
Selo. It was the summer residence of the tsars.
The Great Catherine palce was built by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. It was rebuilt many times. The
facade is richly decorated with columns, pilasters, sculptures. All these decorations were
coated with gold. The palace housed large collections of paintings, sculptures, porcelain,
carpets, Chinese objects d'art. The palace was completely destroyed
during the war. One of
the most valuable parts of this palace was the famous "Amber Room". Mosaic panels and carvings
of amber of different shades from translucent yellow to dark brown were presented to Peter the
First by Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I in 1716. This "Amber Room" was taken by the Nazis
when they retreated. The search still goes on.
There are many parks with palace, monuments to military men and naval victories, garden
pavilions, decorative ruins, gates, bridges in Pushkin. All the palace and parks are located
on a hall some 65 metres above sea level. The former Lyceum in which A. Pushkin studiet from
1811-1817 was in Tsarskoye Selo.
