Pavlovsk
The town is situated in the neighborhood of the town of Pushkin 25km from St.
Petersburg. Formerly it was a royal residence but now it has become a park-town with picturesque
landscapes. Pavlovsk hasn't got magnificent fountains or richly decorated palaces, its main
charm is the park which looks like a natural forest. Catherine II presented her son Paul with
this area when Paul's son Alexander, the heir to the throne was born. Later this place was named
Pavlovsk.
The Great Palace was started in the late 18th century by the architect Charles Cameron before
Paul came to the throne. When Paul became Emperor, the palace was reconstructed and extended by
Vikenty Brenna. In 1803 the palace burnt down and Voronikihin, Quarenghi, Rossi - the most
prominent architects of that time - worked on the reconstruction of the palace. The landscapes
created by artists, decorators show the beauty of Russian nature. Numerous towers, columns,
pavilions, bridges, hills, ponds and ruins of the castle bring a particular charm to the park.
During the war, the palace was damaged though less than the palaces in other palaces.
Many fragments of wall painting, plaster, mosaic were preserved. Much restoration work
had to be done in the park. Today it is difficult to find a trace or war damage in Pavlovsk.
