Most city palaces have a countryside counterpart, for example the stunning summer palace at Peterhof, which can be visited by hydrofoil during the winter months. Another stunning summer palace is Catherine Palace in the town of Pushkin, a short drive from the city centre. Equally splendid are the Russian churches, often with differently coloured exteriors, depending on the era in which they were built. One of the most popular times for visiting the city is the 'White Nights' period in the early summer. During these months it never gets dark and the main bridges are opened for an additional hour each night to allow ships to pass up and down the River Neva. In the winter months the famous Kirov Ballet performs at the Mariinsky Theatre and provides a great attraction to the city.
